On this day...

On this day in 1984 Apple introduced the Macintosh computer. The Macintosh was the first commercially successful personal computer to feature a mouse and a graphical user interface. The Macintosh project started in the late 1970s with Jef Raskin, an Apple employee, who envisioned an easy-to-use, low-cost computer for the average consumer. Raskin named the computer after his favorite type of apple, the McIntosh. The design caught the attention of Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple. Realizing that the Macintosh was more marketable than the Lisa, a similar but higher-end computer being developed by Apple, Jobs began to focus his attention on the project. And the rest is history...

Jef Raskin was the father of the Macintosh project- his name appears on the inside of the case of the original Macs. His hope was to create a computer with mass market appeal that was about $500. We have come a long way since 1984 towards realizing Jef's dreams.
