Sound Design for Film Pt. 3 - Stinger (Clash of the Titans)

Part 3 is a short and sweet look at the various layers which go into the stinger at the end of the Medusa scene we went over in Part 2. I go over some inspirations that I had from Ben Burtt and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The video also hits upon a way to enable automation lanes for group tracks.

Moog, voice, Whalefish, distortion box

Moog, voice, Whalefish, distortion box from Johannes Bergmark on Vimeo.

Short samples from Johannes Bergmark playing at Fylkingen, Stockholm.

The Moog I began to play in the 80's when it was more out than ever. At the time I was inspired by Chick Corea and jazz rock. After I got other interests, the Micro Moog was really getting to be an exciting instrument, sometimes combined with radios that it manipulates.

Later, I combined it with a distortion box, mixer feedback, "virtual analog" modular synthesizers (Clavia micro modulars) and other inputs from voice and instruments like this one, the Whalefish.

More pictures, sounds and info at

Be sure to check out Johannes' Vimeo page for more great videos of the "Whalefish" as well as other homemade instruments!

OTO Biscuit

BISCUIT is a stereo sound effect processor. Thanks to a subtle blend of 8-bit digital and analog processing, BISCUIT is able to create a wide range of sounds. It goes from 8-bit character and lo-fi digital artefacts to numeric distortions.

BISCUIT is very useful to add depth and texture to any kind of electronic sounds. It works best with synthesizers (digital or analog), bassline, drum machines, loops, samplers or computers, but you can use it with any other sources.

BISCUIT is basically an enhanced bit depth and sample-rate reducer, known as "bitcrusher", followed by an analog filter and a simple mixing section (dry/wet). It also offers other features like removing or inverting each of the 8 bits, changing the sample rate from 250Hz to 30kHz, or adding one of the four effects (waveshaper, delay, pitch shifter and step filter).

Biscuit is MIDI compatible.

You can save the whole BISCUIT settings (potentiometers and switches) in 16 presets. A SysEx dump function let you save and recall as many presets you want on your computer.

Features

• Stereo inputs and outputs
• Input gain from -∞ to 15 dB with diode clipping
• Real 8-bit Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog converters
• Unique capability of muting and inverting each of the 8 bits
• Variable sample clock from 250 Hz to 30 kHz
• True analog multimode filter with resonance control
• FX section: Waveshaper, Delay, Pitch Shifter and Step Filter
• Separate control of dry and 8-bit signals
• 16 presets
• MIDI : Continuous Controller, Beat Clock, Program Change and Sysex for presets
• True relay Bypass
• Rugged metallic Neutrik© jacks
• Built like a tank: Thick metal case and strong build
• Dimensions: 190mm x 60mm x 117mm / 7.48" x 2.36" x 4.60" (W x D x H)
• Weight: 580g / 1.27 lbs

BISCUIT is available at 458 Euro (without VAT or taxes).

EditEd4TV - Live Grain Sweep

This Combinator allows you to do graintable sweep/scrub through frozen incoming audio. As opposed to other scrubber combinators I've made, this one works with incoming audio (either a full rack mix, or live audio, or whatever). Previous versions relied on loading a sample into an NN-19 or NN-XT and using "sample start" to sweep around, but this new device doesn't need that... no need to take audio, export/save as wav/aif, reimport, etc. It's all live. This demonstration is with a Factory Soundbank Combinator in run mode, as well as an NN-XT playing back a sample, but again, I'm not using the NN-XT for anything other than sample playback... it's the Combi that's scrubbing the audio.

On this day in 1936 bassist James Jamerson was born in Charleston, South Carolina. James played bass on the majority of Motown hits from the 60's and 70's, from "My Girl" to "I Heard it Through the Grapevine". The session musicians that played for Motown in that era were generally uncredited and referred to in the business as The Funk Brothers. It was Marvin Gaye's fantastic album, "What's Going On", that first acknowledged his work as "the incomparable James Jamerson". Here's James playing with Marvin Gaye in 1973:

Sound Design for Film Pt. 2 - Medusa (Clash of the Titans)

This time around we'll be looking at a sound re-design for the Medusa scene in the Clash of the Titans trailer. Lots of fades, pitch-layering and various other processing going on here as per usual. I also cover a few bits of automation to spice up some of the layers in addition to some dramatic equalization on a forest fire sample in order to make it fit with the scene.

Sir Sedric’s ChipDrums Reason ReFill/ WAV Pack

Filthy Chip Drum Delight!

Featuring;

-3 Performance Combinators w/ Routed Effects

-10 Starter Redrums, Full Kits w/Cymbal Choke

-7 NN-XTs for Searching by Instrument

-150 Kicks (75 Straight, 75 Distorted)

-70 Snares (35 Straight, 35 Distorted)

-20 Hats, Cymbals and Shakers

-25 Fx and Percs

Every sound you hear in the ChipDrums pack was processed using a secret hardware/ software/ hardware signal chain to emulate the sounds of the 8-bit classics like the Commodore 64 and the Atari 2600. It’s known to only two people in the world, and I have the other one locked in my basement…

The difference is, I put my special touch on it. Rather than sticking with just single-layer samples, I tweaked and twerked and stacked and racked as much as I could. Rather than just give you a WAV pack, I made a ReFill with two supremely dirty Combis (Nasty Room and Filthy Box)

I ended up with a collection of drums that are as classic and 8-bit inspired as they are unique and interesting. Anyway, they’re free….. so get ‘em!

video scope in suitcase modular synth - MFB VD-01 from katavist on Vimeo.

This is a collage of demo clips of the MFB VD01 module in use with my euro-modular, the Korg Kaoss Pad Entrancer and the new Wavedrum X.
The first bit simply shows the waveforms of two audio sources from the modular. In the second part (and most of the rest of the video) one sound source is sent to the Entrancer for audio tweaking and simultaneous mangling of the video source from the MFB-module. The output of the Kaoss Pad is then sent back to the LCD TFT monitor. These visuals show both the distorted original waveforms and the Kaoss effects. In parts 5, 9 and 11 the Wavedrum X is played through Doepfer BBD and Wasp filter modules with a foot pedal as modulation source.
I wish I could have rendered and uploaded this in HD, but lack of disc space and time forced me to compromise...

On this day in 1984 Apple introduced the Macintosh computer. The Macintosh was the first commercially successful personal computer to feature a mouse and a graphical user interface. The Macintosh project started in the late 1970s with Jef Raskin, an Apple employee, who envisioned an easy-to-use, low-cost computer for the average consumer. Raskin named the computer after his favorite type of apple, the McIntosh. The design caught the attention of Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple. Realizing that the Macintosh was more marketable than the Lisa, a similar but higher-end computer being developed by Apple, Jobs began to focus his attention on the project. And the rest is history...

On this day in 1910 guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt was born in Liberchies, Pont-à-Celles, Belgium. Django, "I awake" in Romani, spent his youth in gypsy encampments close to Paris, where he learned to play the banjo, guitar and violin. At the age of 18 Django was severly injured in a fire leaving him partially paralyzed. Due to the injury Django had to relearn to play the guitar primarily with only his thumb, index and middle finger (he still used his pinky and ring finger for chord work and strumming.) Django Reinhardt went on to become one of the most famous European Jazz musicians of all-time after his rise to fame with violinist Stéphane Grappelli in the Quintette du Hot Club de France (as seen in the video below):

On this day in 1931 singer/songwriter Sam Cooke was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Mr. Cooke became one of the pioneers of Soul Music, with his unique blend of Gospel and Rhythm & Blues, leading to 29 top-40 hits between 1957 and 1964. But Sam did more than just sing though, he started his own record label and publishing company (one of the first black entertainers to do so) and took on an active role in the American Civil Rights Movement. Sadly Sam Cooke was murdered in 1964 at the young age of 33, but his beautiful voice and music can still be heard on Oldies stations round the world.

Drum Racks in Ableton

Bass in Drum Rack:

Drum Racks are not just for drums, some clever usage of Simpler parameters allows you to play bass right along with your Drum Rack groove...

Random Notes in Drum Rack:

When adding pitched elements to your drum racks it really helps to have the notes change a bit. This can be done automatically for you with the Random MIDI device in Live...

Nested Drum Racks and Choke Groups:

This is a response to a student question, choke groups weren't working, and the problem was nested drum racks. I am getting this question more and more often, so I decided to post this vid. I hope it helps someone out!

Drum Envelope

There are a couple ways to adjust the length of a drum sound with Simpler in Ableton Live, here is an example. This is a video response to a question I received in my Advanced Production with Ableton Live course at Berkleemusic.com.

Velocity Controlled Filter Cutoff Simpler

When creating drum sounds that are short and meant to be repeated it really helps to have it change timbre with velocity. Simpler in Ableton Live makes this real easy to do, check it out. This video is a response to a student in my Advanced Production with Ableton live course at Berkleemusic.com.
